Leeston cars impress
in forest rally sprint
By MAT KERMEEN
SUBARU SLOAN: Phil Sloan sends the stones flying during his fastest and
final run of the weekend.
LEESTON DRIVERS Phil Sloan
and Bruce McMillan left their
tyre marks on the Ashley Forest
rally sprint over the weekend.
A field of 33 contested the
event, with the elimination
rounds starting on Sunday
Sloan and McMillan qualified
for the top 32 elimination, but
McMillan, in a classic Mazda
RX3, fell short of the top 16.
With son Jason in the navi-
gator seat, the pair gave some of
the more modern cars a fright
when winning the Classic 2WD
class and finishing 23rd overall.
McMillan was pleased with
the victory in his fourth attempt
at the event, but the humble
champion was still getting used
to being a crowd favourite.
The car seems to be pretty
popular,'' he said.
I think a lot of people enjoy
seeing the classics out here.''
Cruising through the top 16
and eight eliminations, Sloan's
first test came when he tried to
advance into the final four.
The Subaru driver had the
dirt flying as he recorded his
fastest time of the weekend, but
just missed by two seconds, fin-
ishing fifth overall.
I'm happy with that, we defi-
nitely gave it our best shot,''
