Coffee with art
Arty meals! Melissa Sharplin thoroughly enjoys the
combination of a vibrant cafe and creative studio.
"The people around
here are so awesomely
nice!" says Melissa
The well-known artist
is now firmly
painting in Studio 87
Cafe, on Leeston's High
Street. The original
reason for the move
was the loss of her
studio in Cathedral
Square in the February
The cafe is her new
painting space but she
is clearly enjoying the
environment. She did
not expect to sell her
work in Leeston but
sales of prints and older
works have been good since she took
over the building. The cafe has a retro
ambience, and she describes it as
having a homely and comfortable feel.
Having amazing art on the walls is not
only a drawcard but provides a talking
point for diners.
Studio 87 Cafe is open six days, from
8am till 3pm on weekdays and 9am till
2pm on Saturday.
Food is made daily with delicious
slices and cakes (including the fabulous
fig and hazelnut slice) created by a
local lady. A hearty breakfast will get
you off to a good start and there are
plenty of gluten-free and other healthy
options. Barista-style coffee is the
tantalising Switch Espresso.
Cafe staff are bubbly and friendly
and the aim is to make visitors feel
important. Melissa is happy with the
quieter pace away from the busy city
centre and will stay for the immediate
future regardless of the rebuild in
Christchurch. Certainly that is a
decision Leeston residents will be very
And right now? She has just judged
the Ellesmere School art competition
for the Ellesmere phone book.
Next on the agenda is a painting
''thing'' at the Ellesmere A&P
Association Show on October 13, and
the cafe will have a deal on. After that
is a plan to have the first exhibition of
a local person's printed works by Maori
artist Rei Hamen.
It's all on at Studio 87 Cafe!
Business success: Sally and Steve
Trigg, left, and award sponsor Buddle
Findlay's Rachel Dunningham at the
Selwyn Business Awards.
It is quite special to be able to dine
locally, knowing that your restaurant
has been recognised consistently over
the past two or three years for the
quality of its food and service as well as
the efficiency of its operation.
In May Steve and Shelly Trigg
celebrated two years of providing
excellent cuisine and refreshments, not
only to enthusiastic locals but to a
growing tide of regulars who have
placed Cafe Izone firmly on their map
of destination musts.
After being winner of the 2010 HANZ
Best New Bar/Restaurant, Cafe Izone
scored another award with head chef
Kathryn Ahu taking the Best Beef
Award at the Hospitality Association of
New Zealand Excellence Awards in
2011. Now, in 2012 this vibrant and
innovative institution won Business of
the Year in the Selwyn business awards.
"We owe a lot to our customers,"
"We work hard to provide great food
and service, but the support from the
local community makes it a pleasure."
From a distance the high shade sails
mark the location of the restaurant in
the Izone business hub on the other
side of the state highway from
Rolleston. In the dining area wooden
furnishings ensure a warm and inviting
atmosphere with views of the
Canterbury Plains sky.
With extensive grass-covered shady
areas outside and ample seating, it is
an ideal place for a family outing.
As well as the comfortable area
inside to sit down to breakfast, lunch
and dinner seven days a week, a new
warmed outdoor area protects diners
from the elements.
From 9am until close, Stonegrill
dining is available. Enjoy light meals
with Angus steak, a great variety of
meat, seafood and vegetable
combinations. Stonegrill mains include
succulent offerings such as chicken
breast, seafood and eye fillet wrapped
A la carte starters and mains are
available from 5pm and there is also a
"The new menu is by far our best,"
"There is something for everyone
with even more local produce added
''Enjoy fresh Akaroa salmon on the
Stonegrill and breakfast menu, with a
constantly changing dessert menu on
display to tempt you. It's a must any
night of the week."
