Irrigation NZ invites irrigators to attend this free workshop
Thursday 11 October

Given the National Policy Statement on water, what is the state of the
Environment in your catchment?
• How will the proposed Canterbury Land & Water Regional Plan set the
framework for managing within limits?
• How is Environment Canterbury working with irrigators?
Managing within limits: What does it mean for irrigators?
• Will your practices need to change?
• If so, how?
• What are the tools & knowledge available to meet this challenge?
• Where are the gaps?
There will be plenty of local content, group discussion and question time.
This session will introduce irrigators to practical ideas, technology and
tools to take back to their own farming system.

Flush your taps
Research carried out by the Institute of
Environmental Science and the Ministry of
Health has shown some New Zealand water
supplies contain minute traces of lead. These
traces are near to or sometimes exceed
maximum acceptable levels speci ed in the
New Zealand Drinking Water Standards.
Traces of metals, in particular lead, are
of concern because over time they pose a
potential health risk, especially if consumed
The lead does not come from the water
supply, but from metals in some household
ttings that may be dissolved into the water.
The amount of lead that will dissolve from
a tting depends on the type of water, water
temperature, composition of the plumbing
ttings and how long the water has been in
contact with it.
New Zealand waters are of very good quality
and contain little dissolved substances and
that contributes to their plumbosolvency
(the ability of the water to dissolve the lead).
The Ministry of Health recommends people
do not drink the rst mugful of water if their
tap has not been used for several hours
overnight, for instance.
Instead, run the tap for a couple of seconds
to ush away any water contaminants.

Health website, www.moh.govt.nz
