Residents in our rural areas on the Plains are allowed to burn
crop residue, vegetation, paper, cardboard and untreated wood.
Farmers, in par ticular, often need to take the opportunity before
conditions get too hot, and fire restrictions are in place, to get rid
of excess vegetation and crop residue.
There are still some guidelines to follow however with burning
vegetation, crop reside and drum fires. These include creating a
fire break and ensuring someone is attending the fire at all times.
Burning of tyres, plastic and/or treated wood are not allowed
under Environment Canterbury's Air Plan.

Canterbury Community Trust
provides grant towards the
Selwyn Aquatic Centre
The Selwyn District Council has been granted $100,000 towards
Selwyn Aquatic Centre project by the Canterbury Community
Trust. Additionally, the Community Trust has offered the Council
a Community Loan of up to $200,000 (at 3% for a period of
"We are very grateful to the Community Trust for their generous
grant and loan offer. The Aquatic Centre will be a huge asset
for the Selwyn community and this grant means we are one
step closer to achieving the target of $1.5 million in external
fundraising set by the Council" says Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe.
"As Selwyn continues to grow in size, facilities like the Aquatic
Centre are important contributors to the lifestyle that people
who live in, or visit, our District enjoy".
The Selwyn Aquatic Centre fundraising campaign has already
raised around $1.27 million to date towards the construction of
the facility. "With the great response we have had to date, we want
to exceed our target, so our active programme of fundraising
will continue on past reaching our target" says Mayor Kelvin Coe.
Building began on the new Aquatic Centre in Rolleston in January
this year and is set to be completed mid 2013.
Prebbleton's 150 years
Bring your afternoon tea to the Prebbleton Nature Park at
2.45pm on Sunday 11th November for a picnic.
Afterwards, at 4pm, there will be an opportunity to have a look around
the park and Hamish and Tim Prebble will plant a totara tree donated
by Texture Plants.
A plaque will then be unveiled by two of the volunteers, Rona Ryan and
Jim Hutton, and children from the Prebbleton Play Centre will sing.
