forms in the Selwyn District. The job involves

Having trusted census collectors who know the
area they are working in is vital to the success of
the 2013 Census. The information collected from
the census is used to make future decisions on
hospitals, schools and roads and it gives us an
accurate picture of how our communities are
growing and changing over time.
Census collector roles will be advertised from
7 December. If you think you'd make a great
census collector, then go online to
or phone 0800 CENSUS.

having a few drinks?
plan a safe ride home
The new drink driving campaign for the Selwyn District has commenced. "Having a few drinks?
Plan a safe ride home" is the message we are giving this year.
Alcohol-related crashes increase during the Christmas holiday period. We encourage our
residents and visitors to get behind the campaign, and make safe choices for the ride home
after a few drinks. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of alcohol-related road
crashes and trauma they cause, particularly at what should be a happy and fun time of the year.
As responsible hosts, many of our local hotels and sporting clubs will be supporting the
campaign. If there is a courtesy van use it, and if not,
plan a safe ride home before you go out.
• Have a sober driver
• Use your local pub's courtesy van
• Use a taxi or public transport if it is available
• Ask someone to pick you up
Stay over at your friends place, but make sure you
are not over the limit in the morning
Only accept a lift if you are certain that the driver has
not been drinking or using drugs
Driving or allowing someone else drive after a few
drinks is not an option!

Once again it's time to spruce up your garden
and enter our summer garden competition
which is open to all gardeners in Rolleston.
However, if you are not the type of gardener
who wants to enter the competition,
Community Pride certificates are also
presented to those gardeners who have lovely
gardens as viewed from the street.
Entry forms will be available during December,
and two judges from a neighbouring town
using the Horticultural Society guidelines will
judge the gardens on February 11th or, if wet
on the 12th February 2013.
The categories for the competition are:
Small urban garden,
Large urban garden,
Small rural garden,
Large rural garden,
Garden viewed from the street,
Garden hidden behind the fence.
Come on, give it a go. There are some
lovely gardens in Rolleston.
Thinking about others
Spare a thought this year for our local fire crews
trying to have a break over Christmas.
They do an amazing job as volunteers within our
communities and deserve to spend Christmas
with their family and friends.
You can help make this happen by not lighting
fires which could get out of control and also
making sure they are completely out rather than
having to call out the firemen over the festive
If a neighbour's legal fire is annoying you,
please call the people on-call at Environment
Canterbury's Pollution Hotline, rather than calling
out your local brigade.
If, however, there is an emergency and the fire has
got out of control, dial 111 immediately.
No need to boil water now
in Malvern Hills Dalethorpe
Residents in Malvern Hills/ Dalethorpe are
advised they no longer need to boil water as
testing has shown the water is safe to drink.
Selwyn District Council Utilities Of cer Lisa
Duder says the Malvern Hills Dalethorpe
water supplies have had sufficient water
samples that have been clear of E.coli.
Council asks that residents speak to their
neighbours so that everyone is aware that
the boil water notice has been lifted. The
Council also wishes to thank residents for their
patience. People may still wish to disinfect
their own water tanks if they have not already
done so, and can contact the Council for
further information, 347 2800 or 318 8338

Effects of the new Dog
On the 1st December 2012 the new Dog
Control Bylaw took effect. The main points
• Dog owners will now be able to exercise
their dogs off-leash in many domains and
reserves that were previously prohibited
or on-leash exercise areas. Dog owners
need to be aware that at all times you must
have your dog(s) under effective control.
• Dogs are prohibited within 5 metres of any
public event (an organised recreation,
sporting or social activity occurring
within a defined area and a defined
timeframe) in a reserve or domain.
• All children's playgrounds are prohibited
from dogs and they must now be kept at
least 5 metres away.
• It is an offence not to be carrying a
suitable receptacle for the removal of
any deposits and don't forget the $300
fine for not removing such materials.
You can check out the new
Bylaw and exercise
areas on the SDC
