Checking out the Holden Cruze

CRUZE CONTROL: The car's mix of practical and sporty makes it a highly
The Holden Cruze SRiV packs a lot
of grunt into its spunky little size.
Gorgeous to look at, nice interior,
definitely a nice-to-have.
In the small car range this 1.4 litre,
4-cylinder, 16 valve DOHC turbo
engine feels larger than it is.
It ran as expected, smooth, quiet
and quick on the up-take.
My small frame fitted well in the
driver's seat, and my tall
photographer companion had no

I'd prefer the manual version
simply because I like to maintain
control to chop it up or down a gear,
and enjoy driving.
And if you like a sporty model,
surely that's what you'd want.
The Holden website says that fuel

As a daily commuter, fuel
economy would be a key
consideration for me when
purchasing a vehicle, but it's hard to
go past the pleasing aesthetics of

from the steering wheel as well.
New technology is to the fore
with push-button start and 7'' colour

technology and DVD screen -- the
latter which resorts to audio when
the car is moving.
There is a USB port with iPod
compatibility and a 10G hard disc
drive to play DVDs, pause live radio
and store around 2000 songs.
All of that is less important to me
than the ability to programme the
front headlights to remain on for a
few minutes after leaving the
I didn't get the chance to use this
option, but feel it is a great idea that
has been a long time in coming.
While the raised rear looks great,
it does detract from seeing what is
behind you, so use of the wing
mirrors is essential.
The front seats are easily
adjustable to raise or lower height
level while you are seated.
Rear parking sensors beep
warnings of potential objects if you
come too close.
The front seats also have three
individual heat settings, definitely a
luxury touch here.
The boot is roomy enough to take
several bags. Not a deep rear
interior, one doesn't have to bend
far to place your wares.
Most importantly for me it has a
5-Star ANCAP rating with electronic
stability control, anti-lock braking,
brake assist and six air bags.
At around $40,400 for the 1.4 litre
auto model and $38,900 for a
manual version, this is a very
reasonable price for a new car.
Overall the Holden Cruze SRiV
would be a nice-to-have for me.
I could definitely see myself in
I didn't have enough time to try
out the gadgets it had, and would
need a second visit for that.
Equally I wouldn't purchase a
vehicle on just one test drive, but
there is certainly enough interest in
making that second visit to make up
my mind as it certainly rates as
