Fantastic ride: In this year's Flock Hill Trail
Ride, cyclists will be able to select trails to
suit their experience and ability -- all of it
through magnificent scenery.
For those who enjoy getting out for a really
adventurous spin, the Flock Hill Adventure
MTB Trail Ride or Race -- through privately
owned Flock Hill Station -- is the only
opportunity for mountainbikers to experience
this stunning terrain without being a guest of
Flock Hill's lodge.
Striking rock formations, craggy hills,
pristine rivers and wide open spaces make up
this 14,000ha working station.
This is the event's sixth year. It's a noted
ride, with all participants able to choose trails
to suit their experience. The basic ride is 28km
and includes the flats beside Lake Pearson,
rolling station roads, an old airfield, a fun
downhill stretch, a stream crossing and more.
Experienced riders can add a reasonably
technical 10km loop with fantastic views and
a couple of steep climbs.
The next option is a 2.5km up and down
loop, once again with great views at the top.
On the way home, most taking this route will
add the 4.5km loop out across the Deer Flats
to the Winding stream. Here, you will get your
feet wet fording the stream, which you follow
to make your way home.
These are all-weather trails, with the stream
crossings being assessed on the day for safety.
In the event they are running higher than
normal, some of the ride may be changed.
Fast experienced riders can expect to
complete the ride in two hours, while
reasonably fit recreational cyclists will take
three-and-a-half, and totally social meanderers
and scenery soakers will get home in about
For those who wish to make a weekend of
it, there will be camping allowed at the
station. Visit the Flock Hill website: www.
flockhill.co.nz for more information.
The ride takes place on Saturday, February
23, starting at 10am. Check out: www.
funcycling.net for maps and ticketing details.
Hottest Home Baker will greet Weedons
stampede runners and walkers
All ages: The Weedons Summer Stampede can be enjoyed by
participants of all ages.
It seems that there are
plenty of runs, walks, cycle
and trailbike rides going on
at the moment, and why
not, with all this lovely
weather in Canterbury.
Coming up soon, the
Weedons Summer Stampede
12km run and 5km run/walk --
although distances are
approximate -- will be held
around the beautiful rural
roads of Weedons on
The event, from 9am till
12pm, is being organised by
teachers, parents and pupils
as a fundraiser for Weedons
School, so it is all for a good
cause, as well as being a great
excuse to get some exercise.
The two courses will start
and finish at the Weedons
Domain on Maddisons Rd,
and take you around the
Weedons Country Club, then
through scenic country roads.
Both are mainly fast and
flat, with one gentle rise and
fall in the 12km run. The
event is open to all ages, and
children in buggies are free.
Entries close on February
19. All entrants will get to
meet the talented 2012
Chelsea's Hottest Home
