Mt Dobson a drawcardfor skiiers
By JANINE SUNDBERG
Skiers from throughout the South
Island talk enthusiastically about the
Mt Dobson Ski Area, located about
two hours' drive from Mid
Canterbury on State Highway 8 --
the main route between
Christchurch and Queenstown -- and
about 25 kilometres from Fairlie.
Famous for its sunny, uncrowded,
wide-open spaces, Dobson has a
well-deserved reputation as one of
the best skiing and snowboarding
locations for all grades, with one of
the largest learners' slopes in New
Zealand. If access roads are a worry
for you, have no fears, as the Mt
Dobson Ski Area is one of the easiest
to reach via one of the best alpine
roads in the country.
Stop and take a breather when
you're skiing on the nicely groomed
ski runs, and you'll be transfixed by
the spectacular, heart-lifting views
out across Lake Pukaki, Tekapo and
beyond to the magnificent peaks of
New Zealand's highest mountains,
Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.
The 3km-wide basin area has a
T-bar lift and features the superbly
spacious learners' area, while the
natural half-pipe under the chairlift
is popular with snowboarders.
Mt Dobson has been owned and
operated by the Foote family of
Fairlie for more than 30 years.

Escape from the cold
By JANINE SUNDBERG
Here we are in Mid Canterbury, recovering
from what TV weatherman Jim Hickey
affectionately refers to as a ''polar rodent'' and
I'm definitely of the view that a weekend,
week, or possibly an even longer break away
would be a very good idea.
Chilly temperatures and soggy ground can
get you down pretty quickly and if you have
to deal with these conditions while you're
busy with home or work commitments, then
things can get rather stressful.
Stress can take its toll in part on our body's
ability to resist infection, maintain vital
functions, and even in some cases, the ability
to avoid injury. When you're stressed out and
tired, you are more likely to become ill, your
arteries take a beating, and you're more likely
to have an accident. Your sleep may suffer,
you won't digest your food as well, and you're
likely to become more irritable, depressed, and
anxious. Yes, folks, it is definitely time for a
So where do you head to in the winter if
snow sports really aren't your thing? For a lot
of people -- and I'm one of them -- warmer
climes can be very attractive at this time of the
year, so what are the options without
necessarily spending a lot of money or having
to get a passport?
Option one -- how about the West Coast?
Judging from the temperatures on the
evening weather forecast, it does appear to be
warmer over there and the laidback style of
the Coast certainly sounds attractive. All that's
needed is petrol in the car, a bit of cash and
a suitcase with the essentials in it.
Option2--adrive to Christchurch Airport
will hook you up with a flight to Rotorua,
which is another winter break option, where
warming hot pools can take your mind off the
temperatures in Mid Canterbury. Once again,
there are plenty of great activities available
and, of course, lots of accommodation options
to choose from.
Option 3 -- statistically, the warmest place in
New Zealand during the winter is the Far
North, so if you haven't visited that part of the
country before, a trip to Kaitaia or Whangarei
may interest you. Both areas offer a good
selection of accommodation, shopping and
dining, and there's plenty to see and do,
including trips to Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile
Beach, safari adventures, and checking out
historical gum-digging sites.
However, if a trip to one of our Pacific
Island neighbours appeals, then pop into one
of Mid Canterbury's excellent travel agents
and they'll provide you with all the
information you need regarding the options
available. I've enjoyed several winter breaks in
Fiji and it was certainly the perfect tonic for a
harsh South Island winter.
A final tip: make sure you take plenty of
photographs while you're enjoying your
winter break. You'll be able to look back on
them and get a lift remembering the fun you
had. So, start making plans for that winter
break now, and return feeling refreshed,
revitalised and ready to cope with whatever
the rest of the winter has in store for us.
Tekapo Springs a
great place to visit
Tekapo Springs is located in the stunning
setting of Mt John, in Lake Tekapo. A scenic
two-hour drive from Ashburton, Tekapo is a
growing destination, with a rich history well
worth exploring. Tekapo Springs is
dedicated to providing the ultimate
experience for the whole family, to lift your
spirits. Whether it's a relaxing soak in the
pools, an indulgent treatment at the day
spa, a dash around the skating rink, or an
adrenaline-filled ride down the tubing park,
Tekapo Springs is the quintessential
entertainment and relaxation getaway.
