Events keep liquor and food
licensing services busy
Selwyn's population boom, a growing number of cafés, and more
events in the district are keeping the Council busy carrying out
food and liquor licensing.
The number of venues with a food or health license in Selwyn
has increased by 24% over the past four years, indicating that as
Selwyn's population has grown, more cafés and shops are opening.
The number of liquor licenses issued by the Council has increased
by 39% since 2009.
Environmental Services Manager John Christensen says the
increase in liquor licenses is due to both an increase the number
of special licenses issued and more people holding a manager
or club manager license.
A special license is needed for an event where alcohol is for sale
or when a venue wants to serve alcohol outside of the terms of
its liquor license.
"The increase in the number of special licenses reflects the fact
that there are now many more events happening in Selwyn than
there were a few years ago. Many of the venues in Christchurch
that used to cater for functions are no longer open following the
earthquakes and more functions and events are now hosted in
Selwyn. This is good news for our district's economy," says John.
The Council regularly inspects venues with food and liquor
licenses to make sure they are operating safely.
A controlled purchase operation was carried out by the Police
in Selwyn recently involving 15 and 16 year olds attempting to
purchase alcohol without ID. This operation found that none of
the 13 venues that were visited sold alcohol to minors.
